What is MEND?

MEND stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and Do it! MEND is a FREE fun and friendly programme specially designed to help families get fitter, healthier and happier!

Who is MEND for?

MEND is a 10-week programme for 7 to 13-year-old children who are above their ideal weight, and their families. MEND helps families learn about food choices and healthy eating and discover fun ways to get fit.

What happens on the MEND Programme?

Each MEND session lasts for 2 hours, held twice per week over 10 weeks (20 sessions in total).  Programme highlights include:

Understanding and changing unhealthy attitudes and behaviours around food and effective ways to improve your child’s self-confidence (mind)

Weekly games, activities and swimming for children (exercise)

Practical demonstrations, games and tips about healthy eating and food choices to improve the whole famiy’s diet (nutrition)

Having a go and getting involved! (do it!)

How much does it cost?

The programme is FREE. Big Lottery funding and partnership working between Tees Valley Leisure Ltd and Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland Primary Care Trust enables us to provide places (at a cost of £400 a child) absolutely free.

Is MEND right for my child and me?

The MEND Team will need to assess whether your child qualifies based on their age, weight and health.  The Programme could be for you if:

Your child is aged 7 to 13 years

You are concerned your child is above their ideal weight

You and your child can commit to attending two sessions a week for 10 weeks

You would like to meet other families and make new friends

You would like to learn more about becoming fitter, healthier and happier!
